1. On-Chip RF Circulator – double speed your Wi – Fi-
Researchers from Columbia Engineering developed the first on-chip RF circulator that doubles Wi-Fi speed with a single antenna. They manage to develop circulator which breaks the Lorenz reciprocity. This reciprocity is fundamental characteristic for electronics devices. It is based on the principle that waves have to travel in the same manner for both directions. The RF calculator integrated with the full-duplex receiver is able to work at the same time and at the same frequency. This mean that we can double wireless capacity, which gives endless possibilities for our communication devices.
2. Single Atom Engine-
Physicists from the University of Mainz in Germany led by Johannes Rossnagel developed the single atom engine.This is the smallest engine ever created.
The single atom engine works like this: The physicists used small electrodes to trap the calcium-40 atom. It is trappedin a cone of the electromagnetic energy, from wich, it can’t escape. The electromagnetic cone is basically the engine’s housing. After focusing the lasers on each end of the cone, the atom gets hit. One end of the cone is hitting the atom, and the other end cooling it. This process is called Doppler Cooling. The changes of atom’s temperature impact on its size and finally generate the atom motion ( similar to the motion of a piston in an engine). The team measured the energy output of atom engine and the result is 1.5 kilowatts per kilogram.
Although this engine is not applicable to the practical use, it represents significant progress in the field of nanotechnology.
3. Smart Contact Lenses-
If you ever dream to wear the smart contact lenses like the secret agents from the movies, it may come true now. As the quality of the images in smart glasses is limited, Samsung decided to develop smart contact lenses. These lenses are with the built-in camera, that is controlled by blinking. The office in South Korea granted the patent to Samsung.
How does it work? Contact lenses have a screen, a camera, an antenna and various sensors. The sensors are responsible for detecting the movement of the eye and eyelid. The screen projects the images directly into the wearer’s eyes. In order to serve as a platform for the content, it is necessary to be connected with some device, for example smartphone. When smartphone process all the information, it will be transmitted to the lens.
We still don’t know when the lenses will be available on market, as Samsung work on this since 2014 and seriously developing the contact lens concept.
4. Supersonic Commercial Plane-
It is not a new idea of commercial flight on supersonic planes. We all know Concorde story. However, the developers of this plane believes in much brighter destiny, thanks to the more efficient engine technology and advanced aerodynamic design process.
The aviation start-up Boom Technologies is the developer of the plane called XB-1, promoted under the name Baby Boom.They already built the prototype and full-scale plane expected to take flight in 2020.
A team from the Boom Technologies claims that they use most advanced technologies for their plane. Baby Boom use three General Electric J85-21 turbojet engines, that has variable geometry nozzle system.
Thanks to the use of carbon composites, it is implemented an ideal aerodynamic design. The future passenger supersonic plane will be 170 feet long with a wingspan of 60 feet. Planned number of passengers seats is 44 with $5,000 cost per seat.
